Dr. Ami Kantawala
Ami is deeply committed to guiding students and families through the transformative college admissions journey. A seasoned university faculty member at Columbia University and Boston University and an editor, Ami is passionate about helping learners of all levels—from high school students to professionals—discover and achieve their academic and personal aspirations.
Ami’s extensive experience as a Senior Editor of Art Education and her contributions to prestigious academic journals make her uniquely skilled in helping students craft compelling college application essays and personal statements for undergraduate and graduate programs. Recognized as an accomplished scholar and recipient of numerous awards, including the National Art Education Association’s MacArthur Goodwin Award for Distinguished Service and Distinguished Scholar, her ability to guide students from diverse backgrounds enables her to help them craft authentic stories that resonate with college admissions committees. With a proven track record of mentoring students and novice authors, Ami has supported countless individuals to confidently and clearly navigate the editorial and application processes.
Holding a doctorate from Teachers College, Columbia University, Ami brings advanced training in higher education leadership to her college counseling practice. Ami lives in New York City with her husband, a physician and faculty member in the Department of Anesthesiology at Columbia University, and their two children—a student at Bates College and a student at the Bronx High School of Science. She balances her professional commitments with community service and dedication to empowering the next generation of scholars and leaders.

Joan Rubin, MS, MBA
Joan brings a powerful combination of academic expertise, professional insight, and personal experience to her role as a college consultant. Passionate about working closely with students and families, she is dedicated to helping them navigate the college admissions process and achieve their educational goals.
As the Executive Director of a graduate program at MIT, Joan has spent the past decade leading the program’s admissions team, gaining an in-depth understanding of the intricacies of admissions at highly competitive universities. In addition to her leadership role, she teaches strategy and business development as a senior lecturer at MIT, equipping her with a unique perspective on academic programs and what it takes to craft standout applications.
Joan’s educational background includes a Bachelor of Science from Brown University, a Master of Science from MIT, and an MBA from the MIT Sloan School of Management. She complements her academic achievements with nearly 20 years of industry experience in marketing and business development, where she honed her expertise in branding and messaging—skills she now leverages to help students craft their unique personal narratives and stand out in the college admissions process.
Having successfully guided high school students and her own children through the college admissions process—one of whom became a collegiate All-American skier at Tufts—Joan understands how to balance academics, athletics, and extracurriculars to create well-rounded, compelling applications.
A resident of Wellesley, MA, Joan lives with her husband, an executive in the field of data science, a graduate of Tufts University and Boston College, and a lecturer at Fairfield University. Joan’s holistic approach and breadth of experience make her an invaluable partner in helping students discover their perfect educational paths.
